Jordanian Strikes in Syria Draw Civilian Casualty Claims
Jordan said its air force struck alleged militant sites in Syria’s Daraa and Suwayda provinces in retaliation for a gun attack during a funeral at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Karak that killed nine people and wounded more than two dozen. Jordan said the strikes killed or wounded members of the groups and destroyed vehicles, but did not identify the groups or provide casualty figures; Syrian officials said at least seven civilians were killed, denied that the strikes were coordinated with Damascus, and said an investigation had begun. The attack’s motive remains unclear, and three Jordanian men suspected of involvement were arrested. The strikes prompted the closure of the Nassib border crossing between Jordan and Syria.
