Bend-La Pine Survey Finds 86 Percent Back Silver Rail Reopening

Bend-La Pine Schools plans to reopen Silver Rail Elementary after a shooting that killed three students and a teacher, but the building will remain closed through at least Nov. 6 while repairs are completed and safety requirements, including fire-code requirements for exit doors, are met. A district survey found that 86.2% of responding families favor returning to campus, while families may choose online learning or transfer to another school. The district says students and families may need different amounts of time to recover and is offering child care, learning resources, food assistance and mental-health services. Officials also plan community sessions on district safety and security and will consider feedback as they review existing measures.
