Man Charged in Honolulu Kidnapping Attempt

A 23-year-old man identified as Diesel Kawelo is accused of trying to abduct a 24-year-old woman at a Honolulu condominium parking garage around noon Monday, chasing her toward his truck. The victim’s 77-year-old friend was reportedly elbowed in the face, and the younger woman fought back. Neighbors who heard the women’s cries intervened and helped the victim escape; the suspect fled in his truck. Police arrested him about three hours later after finding a man matching his description running naked nearby. He was charged with kidnapping and second-degree assault and made his first court appearance Thursday. The two women and neighbors have described lingering fear and nightmares after the attack.
