Spain Train Collision Death Toll Rises to 46
Two high-speed trains operated by Renfe and Iryo collided Wednesday morning shortly after 9 am in Toledo province on the Madrid–Seville route. One train struck the rear of a stopped train, derailing two Iryo carriages. The death toll rose from an initial 10 to 39 and as high as 46. Esther Padilla said “that number will surely rise.” 147 people including a baby were aboard the Iryo train and 397 on the Renfe train. Emergency crews and medical teams rushed to the site. Hospitals in Toledo, Alcázar de San Juan and Ciudad Real were placed on alert. Authorities asked Urda to prepare a sports hall for victims. ADIF confirmed a rear-end collision and suspended rail service between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia. Pedro Sánchez offered “affection, solidarity, and support” to victims and families. WHAT'S CONTESTED: Officials and outlets report differing death tolls as rescue continues; Padilla confirmed 39 while other figures reached 46. The cause remains under investigation. A report of possible signalling-related human error has not been established as a finding. Emiliano García-Page headed to the crash site. A January crash near Adamuz killed 45-46 people; a 2013 crash killed 80.
