Arizona Couple Found Dead After Salt River Kayak Trip

Cindy Bowers, 68, and her husband, Anthony Beringer, 59, drowned on Oct. 31 after falling from an inflatable kayak while floating on Arizona’s lower Salt River, authorities said. A man was heard calling for help and saying his wife could not swim; deputies later found both bodies, the woman’s at about 2:11 p.m. and the man’s upstream around 3 p.m. Neither was wearing a life jacket. Officials warned of dangerous river conditions amid heavy rain and higher-than-normal releases from nearby dams, and the deaths remain under investigation.
