Indonesia deploys 20,000 troops to Jakarta after generals detained in wiretap probe
Indonesia is deploying about 20,980 military personnel to Jakarta as authorities investigate an alleged illegal wiretapping operation targeting President Prabowo Subianto and other prominent figures, including politicians, journalists and business leaders. Three senior police generals have been detained, and presidential chief of staff Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo was dismissed; an army officer has been named acting chief of staff. The presidential palace said surveillance of the president could amount to conduct leading toward treason, though officials have not established a motive. Authorities have not confirmed that the troop deployment is connected to the investigation, describing it as a standard security measure; another 13,140 personnel are on standby.
