Brooklyn House Fire Kills Six, Injures Seven

A three-alarm fire at a two-story residential building in Brooklyn's Sunset Park killed six people and injured seven, including three firefighters, early Thursday. First 911 calls came around 1:30 to 1:39 a.m. on the 600 block of 58th Street between 6th and 7th avenues. More than 200 firefighters and emergency personnel responded. Flames flowed from second-story windows with the loud popping of breaking glass. Neighbors were held back by black smoke and fire-extension risk. Firefighters performed CPR on a victim on a stretcher outside. The blaze was brought under control in about an hour, charred the exterior, and spread to a neighboring structure. Hazmat officials responded to a lithium-ion battery found at the scene. Fire marshals are investigating; the cause is not determined. The American Red Cross is helping displaced residents. CONTESTED: NBC New York reported more people missing or presumed missing; other accounts state six killed and seven injured without additional missing persons. A New York Post account said four were pronounced dead at the scene and two died at hospitals, with four civilians injured non-life-threateningly alongside three firefighters.
