Paraguay Senate Impeaches Peña 44-0 Over Bank Allegations
Paraguay’s Senate impeached President Santiago Peña in a 44–0 vote over alleged misconduct related to Ueno Bank’s collapse, and Vice President Pedro Alliana was sworn in as president through 2028. Prosecutors ordered Peña detained at home as criminal investigations continue; they also ordered the arrest of former central bank chief Carlos Carvallo. Lawmakers accuse Peña of conflicts of interest and using political influence to direct public funds to the lender, allegations he denies and that have not been proven in court. The bank’s seizure froze access to savings for nearly three million customers and sparked protests, while authorities investigate regulatory oversight and the handling of public and pension funds. Alliana pledged to support affected depositors.
