Two Pandas Make Atlanta Public Debut
Giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang are making their public debut Friday, Nov. 6, at Zoo Atlanta’s renovated Arthur M. Blank Panda Grove, after arriving from China and completing quarantine and an adjustment period. The six-year-old pair will stay in Atlanta for 10 years under a conservation research agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association. The $6 million upgrade includes expanded indoor spaces, climbing structures, pools and refreshed outdoor habitats. Their arrival makes Zoo Atlanta one of only three U.S. zoos with giant pandas and the only one in the Southeast, restoring a role the zoo held for decades before its previous pandas departed in 2024. Nearby businesses expect more customers, while experts describe the pandas’ return as an example of “panda diplomacy” and a symbolic connection amid broader U.S.-China tensions.
