Kenyan court sentences cult leader Paul Mackenzie to 200 years for Shakahola deaths
A Kenyan court sentenced doomsday cult leader Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison for the deaths of 191 people, including 190 children, whom followers were instructed to starve themselves to death to “meet Jesus” in Shakahola Forest. The court said Mackenzie bore primary responsibility. Twenty-eight co-defendants were also convicted and sentenced for roles including enforcing fasting orders and helping conceal bodies. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty, but the judge declined, citing the possibility of rehabilitation. More than 400 bodies have been recovered at the site, and Mackenzie faces separate manslaughter and terrorism charges; his lawyer has said he plans to appeal.
