Italy's Foreign Minister Reports Dark-Web Data Leak
Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani said cybercriminals had circulated his personal data on the dark web for several days, exposing him and his family to threats while seeking more information about them. He did not disclose what data was leaked or identify those responsible, and said the activity appeared to be continuing. Reuters reported that the hackers were described as pro-Russian and that Tajani appeared on a dark-web list of people labeled hostile to Russia; investigations were ongoing. Tajani linked the targeting to Italy’s support for Ukraine and efforts to protect the Foreign Ministry from cyberattacks, vowed not to be intimidated, and said Italy would strengthen cybersecurity measures and cooperation with allies. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed support for him and called the sale of confidential information about public officials a serious concern. The incident came amid broader security concerns in Europe, including hoax bomb threats and drone incursions.
