WTA Allows Quevedo Tribute to Spain Crash Victims
The WTA faced backlash after Kaitlin Quevedo was initially barred from wearing a black mourning band at the Guangzhou Open to honor the 69 people killed in Spain’s Toledo rail disaster. The tour cited its policy governing symbols and slogans, prompting criticism from fans and commentators, especially because Rafael Jódar was allowed to wear a similar band at an ATP event. After an internal review, the WTA allowed Quevedo to wear the band in her semifinal and expressed condolences to those affected. Quevedo won her quarterfinal match but lost to Lilli Tagger in the semifinals.
