WVU Beats Cincinnati 45-42 Amid Defensive Struggles
West Virginia’s 45-42 win over Cincinnati ended a three-game losing streak and gave the Mountaineers their first Big 12 victory, but it did little to resolve concerns about a defense that allowed 622 yards and six touchdowns. The defense forced four punts and made a crucial late stop to set up the winning field-goal drive, showing some progress even as Cincinnati repeatedly produced long gains. Coordinator Zac Alley says the unit is not playing well enough, while coach Rich Rodriguez says it still lacks a clear identity; WVU has struggled particularly against the run and ranks near the bottom nationally in defensive performance. TCU coach Sonny Dykes, however, said the Mountaineers look more athletic and physical on film than their statistics suggest, while warning that WVU’s fast-paced, run-oriented offense will pose a distinct challenge.
