Renewed fighting overwhelms Yemen hospitals as 130,000 flee homes

Yemen’s renewed fighting is overwhelming an already fragile health system, with medicine shortages, staff fleeing and hospitals closing, being damaged or unable to admit patients. Seven-year-old Tarek al-Salami was carried 270 kilometers by his father for treatment of malnutrition and diarrhea, but an overcrowded hospital had no beds; he reached a feeding center in acute crisis. Hospitals are prioritizing war injuries, leaving pregnant women and other patients without needed care, while children face crowded wards and scarce resources. More than 130,000 people have fled their homes, and aid groups warn that worsening insecurity is making the areas with greatest health needs harder to reach.
