Court filings tied to the crumbling marriage of former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax are shedding new light on the troubled final chapter of his life — one that ended in a fatal murder-suicide involving his wife, Cerina Fairfax.
The documents, filed in January as part of an ongoing divorce case, detail allegations of heavy drinking, financial issues, and deep personal struggles that unfolded in the years after Fairfax’s political career collapsed, per exclusive reporting from the New York Post.
According to the filings, Fairfax had become increasingly isolated inside the family’s home.
His wife alleged he would shut himself inside a home office, surrounded by “empty wine bottles, trash and piles of dirty laundry,” emerging only briefly for food or cigarettes.
The same documents claim he failed to keep up with household responsibilities, including allowing the family’s mortgage to fall into default and neglecting other bills.
One allegation states that he used money intended for his children’s horseback riding lessons to purchase a handgun in 2022.
Cerina Fairfax described her husband in stark terms in the filings.
She alleged that he “had chosen not to be a productive member of the family and that the dictionary definition of ‘deadbeat’ was accurate as applied to him.”
A judge overseeing the case noted that Fairfax, who was representing himself in the proceedings, did not dispute the claims outlined in the documents.
As the divorce moved forward, the court ordered Fairfax to vacate the family home by April 30.
That deadline would never come.
Authorities say that roughly two weeks before he was required to leave, Fairfax shot and killed his estranged wife inside their Annandale home before taking his own life.
The filings also trace the origins of his reported decline.
They state that his mental health began to deteriorate following allegations of sexual assault made public in 2019, during his time in office.
“At that time, [Fairfax] was the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and was an ascendant political figure who was eyeing a run for Governor. The assault allegations deeply affected [him] and appear to have put an end to those plans,” the documents state.
After leaving office in 2022, his wife alleged that his withdrawal from family life intensified.
“Together, these facts paint a vivid picture of [Fairfax] as a talented man who struggles with undefined emotional and psychological issues,” the filings state.
“All things considered, it is clear the trauma experienced by [Fairfax] has not been fully processed,” the documents add, pointing to “isolation, drinking, and lack of participation in family life.”
The couple, married for two decades, had continued living under the same roof during the divorce process.
Cerina Fairfax filed for divorce in July 2025, more than a year after the pair initially separated.
Police later described the situation as a “messy divorce,” noting it likely played a role in the violence that ultimately unfolded.
The case has drawn renewed attention to the personal struggles detailed in the filings, offering a glimpse into the events that preceded the tragic end.
