ESPN’s Greenberg: Sergio Garcia’s Lifetime Exemption Should Be Pulled After Masters Fit

ESPN’s Mike Greenberg was not impressed with Sergio Garcia’s antics at the Masters Tournament Sunday.

So much so he is calling for Garcia’s lifetime exemption into the tournament to be revoked, Fox News reported.

The Spanish golfer received a code of conduct warning in Sunday’s final round of play after he smashed his driver at Augusta National.

He also slammed his club into the turf twice after hitting a shot l in the bunker. Then he took a swipe at a table with a green cooler on it.

“[I’ve been frustrated] through the year,” said Garcia, who posted a 72-hole total of 8 over, per ESPN. “Yeah, just obviously not super proud of it, but sometimes it happens.”

Garcia was asked why he has played poorly in the Masters since winning a green jacket.

“Bad golf,” he responded.

When asked if there was anything specific that led him to playing bad golf, he said, “Bad shots.”

Should Sergio Garcia's lifetime exemption from the Masters be revoked due to his conduct?

Greenberg was not impressed.

“A lifetime exemption is a privilege extended by Augusta to its champions out of respect,” he posted on X. “If that respect is not reciprocated, there is no law that says a past champ cannot be banned.

“I’m not sure they should have Sergio Garcia back after the garbage he pulled today.”

Garcia won the Masters in 2017, the only major victory of his career. Since winning in 2017, he has only made the cut for the final two rounds once.

He finished 52nd in this year’s tournament.

He joined LIV Golf in 2022.

He has two wins in the series – at LIV Golf Andalucía in 2024 and LIV Golf Hong Kong in 2025.
