Husband of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, Matt Hutchins, is speaking out following the “Rust” shooting.
During an interview with NBC News’s Hoda Kotb, Matt Hutchins blamed his wife’s death on both actor Alec Baldwin and the industry.
“The idea that the person holding the gun and causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me,” Matt Hutchins said.
He added, “But gun safety was not the only problem on that set. There were a number of industry standards that were not practiced and there’s multiple responsible parties.”
Matt Hutchins then commented on remarks Baldwin made about the shooting during a previous interview with ABC News.
“Watching him I just felt so angry. I was just so angry to see him talk about her death so publicly in such a detailed way and then to not accept any responsibility after having just described killing her,” Matt Hutchins said.
Baldwin told ABC News, “I feel that someone is responsible for what happened and I can’t say who that is but I know it’s not me.”
During the interview, Matt Hutchins opened up about telling his son his mother had died.
“The first thing I thought…I sat down and I said, ‘I have to get my son’ because I had to be with him,” Hutchins said.
He explained, “I knew that I had to tell my son right away when I saw him.”
Matt Hutchins told Kotb his son “didn’t believe it right away,” adding, “I think that that kind of news you just have to say multiple times so that it can be believed. And so he believed it and we cried together then.”

Halyna Hutchins’ family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Baldwin and others they feel are responsible earlier this month, as IJR reported.
“In the lawsuit, as you can see, names Alec Baldwin and others who are responsible for the safety on the set and whose reckless behavior and cost-cutting led to the senseless and tragic death of Halyna Hutchins,” the family’s attorney Brian Panish said during a press conference.
