Dallas Mayor Warns Socialism Poses a 'Grave Threat' to US Cities

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is warning that the growing socialist movement in American cities poses a "grave threat" to the country, while pointing to Dallas as an example of his pro-business, free-market approach.

According to FOX Business, Johnson made the comments during an appearance on the outlet's "Varney & Co." while discussing the rise of socialist politics in U.S. cities and ongoing debates over economic policy.

"Cities are critical to the future of this country, and they are under a grave threat of the rise of socialism," Johnson said. "There's no question that there is a socialist movement in the United States that would like to change the way we arrange our economy in this country and the way we approach life in general."

Johnson contrasted that movement with his view of Dallas, describing the Texas city as strongly supportive of businesses, competition and free markets.

"This is a very, very pro-business city. Y'all Street is booming. Business is booming here, because we still embrace competition and free markets and believe that individuals ought to have an ability to achieve their dreams by working hard and doing what they want to do with their lives," he said.

Johnson has previously emphasized similar economic and public-safety priorities. He served as a Democrat in the Texas Legislature before winning the Dallas mayor's office in 2019, and then announced in 2023 that he was switching to the Republican Party.

The mayor's latest comments also touched on the debate surrounding data centers in Texas. Johnson said that while local questions about where such facilities should be built are important, he believes the larger issue is how the country approaches its economy and government.

"Our country is facing a graver threat than whether or not we support data centers being permitted in our local jurisdictions," Johnson said. "We're gonna talk about the rise of socialism and how we push back on that."

Johnson has also previously positioned Dallas as an alternative for businesses and residents seeking policies he associates with lower regulation, free markets and support for law enforcement. In 2025, he described Dallas as a "sanctuary city from socialism" following the rise of democratic socialist politics in New York City.

His latest remarks come as debates over socialism, capitalism and the role of government remain prominent in American political discussions, particularly in large cities where candidates have campaigned on expanded public programs and changes to local economic policy.

Johnson's term as Dallas mayor is scheduled to end in 2027.
