Emergency Slide Deploys on Trump’s Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews

An emergency slide was deployed from the Qatari-gifted aircraft intended for use as Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, prompting questions about the unusual activity as President Donald Trump arrived at the military installation.

According to Fox News, the inflatable slide was visible extending from the front right-side door of the Boeing 747 as Marine One carrying Trump stopped nearby.

The door is on the opposite side from the entrance the president normally uses when boarding the presidential aircraft.

Trump later explained that the deployment was part of a routine safety check rather than a response to an emergency.

"They were checking it before, and they just wanted to make sure," Trump told reporters on the tarmac after leaving Marine One. "So they’ve, I guess, already put it up. They want to make sure everything works perfectly."

The White House print pool reported seeing the emergency slide extended from the aircraft while Trump remained inside Marine One. The helicopter's door was still closed as of 2:19 p.m., according to the pool report.

The activity came as the older white-and-blue Air Force One was also being moved into position. The aircraft was pulled from its hangar and parked several hundred yards behind the newer Boeing 747.

The older presidential jet then deployed both its front and rear stairs, adding to the unusual scene on the tarmac as officials prepared for Trump's travel.

The positioning of the aircraft and the deployed emergency slide raised questions about whether something had gone wrong with the newer plane or whether Trump's travel arrangements might change.

Those questions were addressed when Trump emerged from Marine One and said the equipment had been tested to ensure it was operating correctly. His explanation indicated that the slide deployment was a safety-related check rather than an emergency aboard the aircraft.

The Qatari-gifted Boeing 747 has drawn attention as it is expected to serve as a presidential aircraft, making any activity involving the plane subject to heightened scrutiny.

It remained unclear whether Wednesday's safety check would have any effect on which aircraft Trump would use for his next flight.
