A Utah teenager who disappeared more than a year ago was allegedly beaten, abused, and held captive in an Oregon home, where her accused captor used pliers to remove her braces in an effort to conceal her identity, according to federal court documents.
According to Fox News, Kylie Arellano was 15 when she vanished from Garden City, Utah, on May 29, 2025. Now 17, she was found alive Nov. 1, 2027, after authorities received information that led them to a home in Huntington, Oregon.
Federal prosecutors have charged 39-year-old Adam Hunter Harmel in connection with her alleged captivity. A criminal complaint filed Nov. 2 in Utah describes a pattern of grooming, isolation and abuse that investigators say continued across state lines.
According to the complaint, Harmel frequently became violent and struck Arellano. He allegedly forced her to remove her braces with pliers and confined her to the basement, where they shared a bed.
The filing also alleges Harmel kept a knife beneath his pillow and made the teenager sleep against the wall to prevent her from escaping.
Authorities say Harmel first contacted Arellano online in May 2025 and offered her money to travel to Oregon. He allegedly drove from Oregon to Perry, Utah, to pick her up and threw her phone into a river in Logan Canyon. He then took her to his residence and told her she could not leave.
A housemate later told the FBI that Harmel described Arellano as his “new girlfriend.” The complaint says the teenager was given a phone without cellular data, restricting her internet access to Wi-Fi.
Arellano found an opportunity to seek help in October 2026 while playing the online game “Among Us.” Arellano connected with another minor, eventually disclosed her identity and said she was being held against her will.
The other player's parent contacted Arellano's family, which alerted the FBI. During a monitored video call on Nov. 1, the teenager showed investigators the knife and other evidence supporting her account.
Oregon State Police and federal agents rescued her that day and arranged medical treatment. Harmel was later arrested during a traffic stop in Ontario, Oregon.
U.S. Attorney Melissa Holyoak said the safe return of the teenager had been the priority, while FBI Director Kash Patel vowed that authorities would pursue those accused of exploiting children. Harmel was scheduled to make his initial federal court appearance Wednesday.
