A Squeeze concert in Virginia was canceled Thursday after a worker was fatally crushed beneath the band’s tour bus just hours before the performance.
U.S. Park Police responded to Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts around 5 p.m., according to Fox News.
The English rock band had been scheduled to take the stage at 7:30 p.m.
When officers arrived, the worker was still beneath the tour bus. Park Police said a supporting apparatus failed, causing the vehicle to collapse onto him.
The worker’s identity had not been released by authorities.
Wolf Trap announced the cancellation in a social media post, citing the fatal accident and saying the decision was made out of respect for those affected.
“There was an accident involving a member of the community at Wolf Trap National Park,” the venue said. “Out of respect, tonight’s show has been canceled.”
Squeeze also addressed the tragedy, saying the band was shocked and saddened by what happened at the venue.
“Squeeze are deeply saddened and shocked by an incident that occurred at the venue earlier today, which resulted in the loss of a life,” the band said in a statement to Rolling Stone.
The group said it would work with the promoter and Wolf Trap to determine whether the concert could be rescheduled. The band also said additional information would be provided to ticket holders once plans were finalized.
The accident left concertgoers visibly shaken as word spread through the venue’s parking areas. Some fans left after learning what had happened, while others stayed behind and tried to process the news.
Debbie Daniel, who was at the venue, told FOX 5 DC that she noticed the large emergency response before learning someone had been killed.
“It was horrible when we found out that happened,” Daniel said. She recalled seeing more than 15 emergency vehicles arrive and realizing that something serious had occurred.
Eric Anderson, another fan, said he understood why the concert could not proceed after the fatal accident.
“Especially from what we're starting to understand about the circumstances, the show can't go on. And we understand that,” Anderson told FOX 5 DC.
The circumstances surrounding the accident remained under investigation, and authorities had not publicly released the worker’s identity. Squeeze’s planned performance was canceled for the night as officials and the venue responded to the fatal incident.
