$1,400,000 From Democrat’s Coffers Suddenly Vanishes Into Thin Air Without Trace Or Explanation

“I’m Katie Hobbs, and the rules don’t apply to me.” That might as well run at the end of the next campaign ad featuring Arizona’s governor. Since taking office in 2023, Hobbs has been building a rap sheet of scandals that would make Minnesota Governor Tim Walz blush.

From one of the largest Medicaid fraud scandals in Arizona history to a pay-to-play scheme that has put her administration under active criminal investigation, Hobbs has taken corruption to new heights in our state. But now, her latest campaign-finance reports are raising even more troubling questions: How did more than $1 million in small-dollar contributions disappear? And why are over 46,000 of her contributors listed as unemployed?

A Million-Dollar Campaign-Finance Mystery

How many times can a campaign-finance report be amended before it starts to raise red flags? For the 2026 Quarter 2 report, the Hobbs campaign has managed to amend it 10 times so far. But why? Were there some typos or decimals in the wrong spot? Nope. Many of these amendments repeatedly changed the amount of money the Hobbs campaign reported receiving.

The biggest mystery involves more than $1.4 million in small-dollar contributions. In its original filing, Elect Katie Hobbs reported $1.426 million in exempt small contributions—donations under $100 that can be reported in aggregate. The campaign reported the same amount in its first amended filing.

But something happened in its second and third amended filings. All of a sudden, that $1.426 million dropped to $0. And then, in the fourth amended filing, nearly $400,000 suddenly reappeared.

The campaign’s total receipts also followed a similarly bizarre path, jumping from $2.64 million to $3.1 million, falling below $1.7 million, and then climbing back above $2.6 million through various amendments.

So, where did the money go?

That’s a great question. And Hobbs has yet to answer. But it’s not the only anomaly in her campaign-finance reports.

Thousands Of Unemployed Donors

While the disappearance of $1.4 million is certainly strange, another head-scratcher also emerged in Hobbs’ 2026 filings. In the three campaign-finance reports she has filed this year, Hobbs has listed more than 46,000 instances of contributors who are either “not employed” or “unemployed.”

And she’s not alone. Democratic Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes reported more than 17,000 such instances this year, while Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes reported more than 12,000. All combined, the three Democratic campaigns have reported more than 76,500 instances of contributors who are listed as “not employed” or “unemployed.”

By comparison Republican gubernatorial candidate Andy Biggs reported just 26 instances, while Republican Secretary of State candidate Alex Kolodin reported just two and Republican Attorney General candidate Warren Petersen reported zero.

Hmmm…that’s quite a difference.

While being unemployed certainly doesn’t mean someone can’t donate to a political campaign, it does seem to defy belief that tens of thousands of unemployed people would be exclusively sending their limited funds to Hobbs and the rest of the Democrat slate.

It’s pretty obvious something else going on here. After all, it wouldn’t be the first, second, or even third scandal we’ve seen under Hobbs.

America’s Most Scandal-Plagued Governor On The Ballot

More than $1.4 million in small-dollar contributions disappeared. Over 46,000 instances of contributors who are either “not employed” or “unemployed.” This isn’t exactly surprising coming from a governor whose tenure has been defined by scandal.

And despite the best efforts of AG Mayes to whitewash the investigation, Hobbs remains under criminal investigation by County Attorney Rachel Mitchell for an alleged pay-to-play bribery scheme involving Sunshine Residential Homes. After the group donated approximately $400,000 to the Arizona Democratic Party, Hobbs’ gubernatorial campaign committee, and her inaugural fund, Sunshine was granted a 30 percent increase in their rates at a time when the Arizona Department of Child Safety cut loose 16 providers.

Then, earlier this year, one of the largest Medicaid fraud scandals in state history came to light when it was discovered that the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) had been rocked by more than $2 billion in fraudulent billing. One of the most prominent cases involved Farukh Jara Ali — who was indicted for submitting more than $650 million in fraudulent Medicaid claims —and occurred under the watch of Katie Hobbs.

But that’s not all.

Hobbs shelled out $700,000 for a new state logo to a firm owned by the brother of Lisa Urias, her former Office of Tourism Director. She spent millions on a misleading ad to take credit for Republican work. She turned a $2.5 billion budget surplus she inherited from Governor Ducey into a $1.4 billion deficit. She has campaigned on claims of success in negotiating protections for Arizona’s water rights only to see the federal government announce that our state would face the largest Colorado River water cuts. And her illegal housing moratorium—which was struck down in April—could end up costing Arizona taxpayers more than $1 billion.

It’s no wonder she refuses to debate Republican candidate Andy Biggs.

This is your governor, Arizona. She wants to play personal politics, take care of her friends, and give kickbacks to her donors — all at the expense of taxpayers. It may not be clear where that $1.4 million went. We may not have all the answers about the tens of thousands of “unemployed” donor entries. But one thing is clear: Katie Hobbs has spent four years acting as though the rules don’t apply to her. Arizona cannot afford to give her another four.
