Democratic Kansas Senate nominee Adam Hamilton became the first Democrat Tuesday to win in Kansas for the first time since 1932.
Hamilton defeated Republican Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall by a six-point margin, The Associated Press reported. He became one of many Democrats to make history in a deep-red state while voters soured over President Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran war and the economy.
Outside groups and Republican political action committees (PACs) spent unprecedented amounts of money in Kansas to help Marshall try to win reelection. The Senate Leadership Fund, the Senate Republicans’ campaign arm, spent $14 million in Kansas.
Democrats spent $59.9 million in advertisement spending to support Hamilton, while $42.3 million was spent to support Marshall, AdImpact reported.
Marshall faced backlash after The New York Times reported that he sued 700 patients for outstanding debt during his time as an OB-GYN. Some of the former patients were new mothers whose paychecks and bank accounts were garnished.
Marshall paid a bakery $1,300 after its owner, Holly Thomas, accused his 2020 campaign of leaving a nearly $700 bill unpaid for six years. The senator said on X that he paid the bill and apologized to the bakery, claiming he had “no idea” how the bill went unpaid for six years.
Kansas has not had a Democratic senator since former Democratic Kansas Sen. George McGill left office in January 1939.
The average price of diesel in Kansas cost $5.98 per gallon, according to AAA. Agriculture is central to Kansas’ economy.
Republican candidates lost in deep-red states across the U.S., including Texas, Ohio and Iowa.
