A federal jury convicted an American woman who married an ISIS fighter and underwent military training with the terrorist organization in Syria.
Halima Salman, 27, a former Brooklyn resident, voluntarily received weapons training from an all-female ISIS military battalion and was authorized to carry ammunition and an assault rifle, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced in a Tuesday press release. Investigators recovered a certificate confirming her completion of the training, along with photographs of Salman posing with an ISIS flag in the background and footage of her brandishing an AK-47 rifle on her husband’s cellphone.
“She was convicted by a jury in a trial that ended yesterday in New York,” a DOJ spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement.
“The atrocities committed by ISIS, including mass executions, sexual slavery, and the systematic terrorizing of civilian populations, represent some of the gravest crimes of our time,” Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg said in the release. “There is simply no excuse for aligning with or receiving military training from an organization responsible for such suffering. Today’s verdict sends a clear message that those who support this death cult will be found and prosecuted.”
As a teenager in 2017, Salman’s father told her that they were visiting family in Turkey. Instead, they drove into Syria where their vehicle was surrounded by masked gunmen. For months, they lived in ISIS-owned buildings. Before her father was killed in a 2018 air strike, he married her to an ISIS fighter. She was 18 at the time, according to NBC.
“Halima Salman knowingly sought out terrorist training from ISIS in Syria, she subscribed to their belief system and learned how to use weapons of mass violence,” Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle of the FBI New York Field Office said in the release. “Defending the homeland will always be the top priority of the FBI, and anyone found guilty of supporting a Foreign Terrorist Organization will be investigated and prosecuted. Today’s verdict is a victory in the relentless fight against terrorism in the U.S.”
