House Speaker Mike Johnson released a long list of endorsements supporting his bid to remain House Republicans’ leader Monday two weeks before the leadership elections.
House Republicans will choose their leaders for the upcoming Congress on Nov. 10 and elect a speaker if they hold onto their narrow majority. Johnson released dozens of statements on X from several former congressional members and conservative leaders who praised his leadership over the past three years.
“Mike Johnson inherited a House GOP conference that had destroyed a Speaker and found itself so bitterly divided it could not agree on anything,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said. “With extraordinary patience, astonishing discipline, a refusal to get mad at people and a daily working partnership with President Trump that won again and again when defeat seemed certain, Mike created a record for legislative effectiveness that is historic.”
Johnson also quoted Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts, who said that Johnson had “delivered consequential conservative policy victories.” He added quotes from America First Policy Institute interim president and CEO Greg Sindelar, Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist, CatholicVote CEO Kelsey Reinhardt, Election Integrity Network founder and chairman Cleta Mitchell and America First Works president Ashley Hayek.
Johnson expressed hope that House Republicans will keep the majority after Nov. 3 and that he would remain speaker.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen Nov. 4. … If I were a betting man, and I’m not, I would put all the chips on me being speaker of the House in a Republican majority,” Johnson told Punchbowl News. “I don’t think it’s going to be a red wave election. I don’t think we’re going to have a 20-seat majority, but I believe it’s going to be the majority. … I think they would expect me to continue to keep this thing going.”
Democrats need to win at least four seats to win the majority. Cook Political Report shifted 19 House races toward Democrats Friday, including a handful of Republican-held seats. The elections forecaster shifted the races in Arizona’s sixth district, Colorado’s eighth district, Virginia’s second district and Wisconsin’s third district into the “Lean Democratic” column less than two weeks before Election Day.
The race to oust Democratic Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar in Texas’ 28th district shifted to “Likely Democratic.” The Congressional Leadership Fund, the top House super PAC, canceled approximately $3 million in planned advertisement spending against Cuellar while the incumbent congressman held a 20-point lead in the polls.
The Congressional Leadership Fund slashed $6 million in planned advertising Wednesday in Florida’s 25th district, where Republicans hoped to oust Democratic Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz. The No Going Back PAC, a super PAC backed by MAGA Inc., planned to spend $6.3 million in the district.
