Westchester, New York officials identified the programming error causing a county-wide polling machine glitch Tuesday that prevented the machines from accepting paper ballots.
County officials announced that a last-minute change to a contest on the paper ballots prevented polling machines from scanning the ballots, as the machines’ programming had not been updated to reflect the change. Westchester voters have been directed to continue filling out paper ballots, which will be placed in emergency orange bags and counted later, according to the Westchester County Board of Elections in their press release.
The polling machine glitch occurred in a key battleground county for New York’s 17th Congressional District, where Democratic challenger Cait Conley was seeking to unseat incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Lawler.
The paper ballots were set to be driven with a police escort to the Board of Elections headquarters, where they were to be counted after polls close at 9:00 P.M. EST, ABC 7 Westchester reported.
“We strongly encourage all voters to remain in line, exercise patience and, most importantly, cast their ballots,” the Westchester County Board of Elections said.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins told ABC 7 that the situation was a “debacle,” but that the polling machines were not hacked. The New York State Board of Elections said the issue stemmed from a programming error that occurred when a contest in the county was changed last-minute. The polling machines were not appropriately updated and then could not accept the ballots, ABC 7 reported.
