Senate Republicans’ top campaign arm planned to spend $1 million in deep-red Mississippi Thursday after the Senate race became unusually competitive, a source familiar confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The Senate Leadership Fund planned to launch an advertisement campaign in “the low seven figures” to support Republican Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, who leads Democratic Mississippi Senate nominee Scott Colom by single digits, Semafor first reported. The decision came after Senate Democrats’ top campaign arm planned to spend $1.2 million on television advertisements to boost Colom.
A Data for Progress survey from August found Hyde-Smith in the lead by six points, while an Impact Research survey from April found her leading by three points, according to The New York Times.
Wedgewood Polls admitted to fabricating a poll suggesting that Hyde-Smith held a four-point lead. It said that the surveys were part of an “experimental project” to expose how easily a fabricated polling firm could mislead the public.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Mississippi Thursday to campaign with Colom. Democratic Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock, Democratic Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson and former President Barack Obama campaigned and endorsed Colom. Obama appeared in a commercial to endorse the Mississippi Democrat.
President Donald Trump won Mississippi by a 24-point margin against Harris. The state has not had a Democratic U.S. senator since former Democratic Mississippi Sen. John Stennis retired in 1989.
Hyde-Smith won her 2020 election by a 54.1% to 44.1% margin.
Republican PACs spent unprecedented amounts to defend Republican-held seats, including in Texas and Kansas. Republicans spent over $300 million to support Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, $14 million to support Republican Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall and $5 million to support Republican South Carolina Sen. Darline Graham.
The PACs scaled back their time and resources in North Carolina and Georgia, two battleground states. Democrats also slashed ad spending in the states while Democratic Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff and former Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper held comfortable leads in the polls.
