Police in Valdosta, Georgia, say a man who demanded surveillance footage was fatally shot by a convenience store employee.
Officers had been called to the store Sunday by reports of gunshots made to 911, including a call from the store employee, according to Fox 49, a Tallahassee-area TV station. Officers arrived at the store to find a 53-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Police said the 53-year-old man had been drinking and was in possession of a gun when he attacked a 38-year-old man, shooting and wounding him. Police said the 53-year-old then tried to force the convenience store employee to hand over surveillance footage of the assault, holding the gun while making threats.
Instead, the store employee pulled a gun of his own and opened fire. Police are not charging the employee, saying he was acting in self-defense, while they also asked people who ran to the scene to film video to come forward.
“It is deeply concerning that people in our society now think it is more important to film a person lying on the ground, to get ‘likes’ or ‘views’, instead of using their phones to call 911 to ensure emergency assistance is on the way,” Valdosta police chief Leslie Manahan told the TV station.
The station had previously reported that police in Tallahassee, Florida, said a man taken to the hospital was the aggressor in another Sunday altercation that ended with a gunshot that left a man wounded.
The incident took place at a Walgreen’s store, Fox49.tv, a local TV station, reported. Police say that the wounded man “aggressively approached the victim,” who fired a shot that struck the assailant.
That armed citizen was not charged, with police citing Florida’s “stand your ground” law.
