About 50,000 Catholics gathered in St. Louis on September 24, 2026, for the beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, an American church leader celebrated for his preaching, television work and devotion to the faith. Attendees included Australian priests whose accounts described Sheen’s influence on their spiritual lives, as well as clergy and seminarians who saw the large gathering as a hopeful sign for the Church. One deacon recalled being moved to witness the ceremony after years of following Sheen’s teachings and visiting his tomb. At a vigil the night before, Bishop Robert Barron praised Sheen’s role in bringing Catholic evangelization to electronic media and emphasized that Sheen understood holiness as friendship with Christ.
