Man wounded at Trump Butler rally dies at 76

James Copenhaver, 76, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday after being shot twice at Donald Trump's Butler rally on July 13, 2024. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said he died at West Penn Hospital. His cause of death has not been released, and it is unclear whether the shooting injuries contributed. He was hit in the left triceps and abdomen; a bullet lodged near his spine left lasting nerve damage and numbness from knee to hip. He had multiple surgeries, including colon repair, and still had bullet fragments in his body.

Ken Silva first reported the death, citing sources close to the family. Copenhaver had written the foreword to Silva's book, recalling that a move to the bleachers "turned out to be nearly fatal" and that he told a companion, "I think I have been shot," before a second hit. He wrote: "With a bullet lodged next to my spine, I'm going to have a diminished usage of my left leg for the rest of my life." In June he and David Dutch sued the U.S. government alleging Secret Service security failures. Wife Marianne Copenhaver will continue the suit with Dutch and his wife. The attack also killed Corey Comperatore and wounded Dutch and Trump.
