Munetaka Murakami rated the Chicago White Sox clubhouse celebration one hundred the night they clinched a playoff berth.
The White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 9-1 on Thursday to lock in the postseason. Their 26-year-old rookie first baseman from Kumamoto, Japan, had signed a two-year, $34 million contract and put up 35 home runs, 77 RBI and an .825 OPS for a club that finished the year 84-78 after losing more than 100 games in each of the prior three seasons. They trailed the Cleveland Guardians by one game in the AL Central at the time.
Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) shared it on X with the line "Celebration Mune is our favorite 🤣" and the post drew 9,538 likes. The clip from Sox on 35th passed two million views within hours.
CHSN's Brooke Fletcher asked the questions with interpreter Kenzo Yagi at his side while the party rolled.
She wanted a score from one to ten for his first playoff-clinching celebration.
"One hundred! Not 10 -- 100!" Murakami said.
How many bottles of champagne had he opened?
"Hundred!"
What did it feel like celebrating with his teammates? As they poured beer and champagne on him he answered, "I am Japanese!"
