South African jurist and human rights lawyer Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for advancing international law and promoting peace. The Nobel Committee praised her courage and integrity, citing her anti-apartheid advocacy, work as a judge at international tribunals including the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, service as the UN human rights chief and a judge on the International Court of Justice, and leadership of a UN inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territories. The award follows repeated efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to win the prize and reports that he pressured the committee. The Nobel Foundation set the prize amount at 12 million Swedish kronor as the award marked its 125th anniversary.
