Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is under investigation in the Philippines after his son reported finding child sexual abuse images in the 80-year-old’s former Cebu home, according to the Philippine Department of Justice and multiple news reports.
The DOJ’s Anti-Trafficking and Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children task force “is currently investigating the matter,” Undersecretary Nicholas Ty told the Philippine News Agency. The Sun first reported that Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother, found four boxes containing “hundreds, if not thousands” of child sexual abuse images and handed them to police; People and Page Six later cited the same report.
What the reports allege
- People reported that the alleged material included videos of girls no older than 10 or 11 years old engaged in sexual acts, three photos of naked girls, and a 15-minute video of naked girls on an old cellphone.
- Page Six described the alleged stash as “hundreds, if not thousands” of images, citing The Sun.
- Thomas Markle Jr. claimed the items were in his father’s former home in Cebu and turned them over to local police, according to the reports.
What happens next
Philippine police are examining a laptop found alongside the alleged images, and “full results” are expected within a week, the country’s interior minister told AFP, according to CNA.
Meghan is “deeply distressed” by the allegations, the Associated Press reported. No charges have been announced against Thomas Markle Sr.
