How to throw a football spiral
For new throwers who want the ball to fly straight and stay nose-first through the air.

A tight spiral starts with spin from your fingertips at the moment you let go. That spin steadies the ball so it cuts farther and truer.
You'll need a football and at least 15 feet of open space free of people or windows.
Set your middle and ring fingers across the laces near the middle of the ball. Keep your palm off the leather. You know it's right when the ball rests only on your finger pads and feels ready to spin.
Place the foot opposite your throwing hand a half-step ahead. Bend both knees slightly. If your feet sit closer than your shoulders, slide them out; if they sit wider, slide them in until you feel balanced and ready to push.
Tuck the ball near your head so your upper arm stays level with the ground. Your other hand can rest lightly on the ball. The hold is set when you can see under your elbow and the ball sits steady without dropping.
Push hard off the back foot. Let the step carry your weight toward the target. The move lands right when your front foot plants flat and your belt buckle begins to face forward.
Keep the ball high until your chest squares up. Your throwing hand comes over the top. You feel the power when the arm whips from the shoulder turn rather than from the elbow alone.
Point your fingers down the target line after the ball leaves. Watch for the tight spiral. The throw succeeds when the nose stays up and the ball spins without wobble in the first 10 feet.
The most common mistake
Most beginners cradle the ball in the palm and kill the spin. Shift it forward onto the fingertips so the palm stays clear.
Pro tip
Flick the ball straight up a few times from the same grip to watch the spin before you add distance.
Say it every time
Fingertips, front foot, hips then snap
