Bizarre Dan Sullivan Scheme Leaves Voters Shocked And Confused

The retired school teacher known as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. vanished on Election Day last Monday. He left his small hometown of Petersburg and was spotted on a flight to Anchorage. He did not answer emails or texts from the press on Tuesday. This happened while voters cast ballots for a Senate seat with four candidates on the list.
Confusion spread immediately among the people in line. According to reports, Greg Martone stated he remembered seeing just one candidate named Dan Sullivan. He said, “I might just be having a brain freeze but I don’t remember the second Dan Sullivan.” The voter worried he might have picked the wrong man.
The Scheme and The Accusations
A bombshell New York Times report claimed aides for Mary Peltola were told to find candidates named Dan Sullivan. The goal was to complicate the race. The Times reported that Gerald Heikes, another independent candidate, said he was recruited “by a guy from the Midwest.” He said someone offered to back his run without giving money. The New York Post noted this report sensationally claimed the Peltola campaign solicited the second Sullivan to siphon votes.
President Trump did not mince words about the situation. He called it a “total fraud” in an interview Tuesday morning. He said, “It’s a total fraud. It’s a fraud on the voters. And it’s a criminal act.” The RedState outlet reported that the incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan heard from supporters who thought they voted for the wrong guy. The Senator stated, “I’ve heard from people who think they’ve voted for the wrong guy and have apologized to me. Just like I said, the scheme is working.”
Ballot Tricks and Missing Names
A PAC called Alaska Values Pac paid for a flyer listing Mary Peltola, Gerald Heikes, and Dan J. Sullivan Jr. The flyer did not include the incumbent Republican, Dan S. Sullivan. Daniel J. Sullivan is listed above the incumbent on the ballot. His name is clearly marked as Daniel, not Dan. A sample form shows the incumbent is identified as a Republican. Yet the teacher remained missing when the votes were counted.
Alaska uses ranked-choice voting. This system can make the final count take a long time if no one wins a clear majority. GOP leaders are worried about losing votes in a state where polls show Peltola is tied or ahead. The Democrats need to gain four seats to take control of the Senate. This seat is one of seven toss-ups heading into the midterm cycle.
