The Botched Attempt
Christa Pike is alive and moving around her hospital room after a failed execution attempt in Tennessee. In the state, she was set to be the first female executed in more than 200 years. Instead, she became the first prisoner in the US to survive a lethal injection, according to the New York Post. The event happened on September 30 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. Pike was given two doses of pentobarbital by state corrections officials. The process went wrong when at least seven needles were used. A needle extracted from her arm emerged bent at a 90-degree angle.
Upon arrival at the hospital, she was reported unconscious and in critical condition. But on Tuesday, she woke up. Her lawyer Stephen Ferrell spoke to the BBC about her current state. Her arms remain very injured and she cannot use them much.
Her Mental State
Pike is physically recovering, but her mind is still struggling with the trauma. Ferrell told the outlet that her mental state is a mix of good and bad. He noted that she is fairly with it, but she is also somewhat foggy. Her thought process breaks easily, causing her to forget her destination. She mistakenly thought it was still September when she first woke up. Dr. Joel Zivot, an anesthesiologist advising her lawyers, said she can communicate in a basic way.
Following Wednesday’s court session, attorney Randall Spivey informed reporters that she recalls the incident distinctly. She fully understands that the state attempted to put her to death. Tennessee officials must keep syringes and other room evidence, a judge has commanded. Pike stays in critical care due to pneumonia and a blood clot located in her arms.
Family Reaction
Pike’s aunt, Carrie Ross, believes her niece’s survival is a sign from God. Ross helped raise Pike and says she loves her as a daughter. Ross told the Daily Mail that the Almighty clearly does not support her execution. She added that it is not the Department of Correction or the family in control, but God.
Since Pike regained consciousness, Ross and other relatives have been unable to speak with her. She described the past week as a blur of tears and emotional highs and lows. Ross wants the death sentence to be commuted after this failed attempt. She argued that a second attempt would be torture for her niece. Pike was sentenced to death for killing her classmate Colleen Slemmer in 1995.
