Debra Messing Drops Democrats Reveals Real Reason

A Star Crosses the Line

The most surprising fact in New York politics right now is that Debra Messing is backing a Republican. The “Will & Grace” star has long supported Democrats, yet she is now throwing her weight behind GOP candidate Bruce Blakeman. This move comes after years of her criticizing the very party she once championed. She told the crowd at a Manhattan fundraiser that she is grateful he is running. Messing said, “I am so grateful you are running. You are what we need more than anything,” according to the New York Post. This is not a small shift for a woman who once stumped for Hillary Clinton.

Why would a liberal icon abandon her party for a conservative? The answer lies in the cost of living and the safety of her hometown. Messing, a Brooklyn native, told Blakeman that the decline in her city has been devastating. She noted that people are leaving because they cannot afford to stay. She called the Big Apple a place she loves but said it is not the city she loves anymore. That sentiment is powerful coming from someone who has lived there her whole life. She specifically mentioned that utilities need to be lower for struggling families. Her words suggest that money and safety matter more than party labels.

The Cost of Doing Business

The financial pressure on New York residents is the driving force behind this endorsement. Messing noted that residing in New York City has become prohibitively costly. She praised Blakeman for having cost of living at the top of his mind. The GOP candidate campaigns on a platform pledging tax reductions for New York. Messing cited the $9 congestion pricing toll for entering Manhattan as a significant issue. She believes Blakeman is the answer to these economic woes. Her comments about the city losing business and people leaving are backed by her own observations. She stated, “People are just really struggling. They need their utilities to be lower,” per the New York Post.

This is not just about one actress changing her mind. It reflects a broader frustration with how the state is being run. Messing has a history of supporting far-left candidates, including Cynthia Nixon’s 2018 campaign for governor. Yet now she sees a different path forward. She told Blakeman that his campaign is the affordable one. The Daily Wire reported that she re-shared a post calling a mayoral candidate a “literal Karl Marx-quoting, America-hating jihadist.” This sharp turn shows she is done with the status quo. She sees a direct link between high taxes and the decline of her community.

Safety and Family Values

Beyond the wallet, Messing is also concerned about safety and community. As a Jewish woman, she has publicly expressed outrage over the Hamas attack on Israel. She wants to ensure that Jewish people can live safely in New York. Blakeman thanked her for her support and for having the “courage to speak out.” The Daily Wire reported that he said she is doing her utmost to protect New York and ensure safety for Jewish residents within this community and state. This focus on safety resonates with voters who feel ignored by current leadership. The RedState noted that this endorsement is a pretty stunning move in the race.

The incumbent, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, is now facing a new challenger from within the cultural elite. Messing’s support brings attention to the issues of cost and safety that many voters feel daily. It shows that when government fails to protect families, even lifelong liberals will look elsewhere. The question now is whether other stars will follow her lead. We must watch to see if this shift in the cultural landscape changes the outcome of the election. Blakeman’s promise of tax cuts and safety offers a clear alternative to the current administration.
