Democrats Win Big, But Their Radical Left Wing Just Lost Power

Everyone expected the loud voices on the far left to hold the new majority hostage. They thought they could demand every single vote. Instead, the massive Democratic win just made their demands irrelevant.
That is the twist no one saw coming. The election results are in, and the numbers tell a wild story. Both chambers of Congress are projected by NBC News to be under Democratic control. This is a huge shift for the party. But look closer at the math. The Democratic Socialists of America thought they were the kings of the castle. They were wrong.
A Historic Wave Flips Seats
The voting numbers are shocking. In Texas, Democrat Leticia Gutierrez beat Republican Alex Mealer by almost 16 points. That district voted for President Donald Trump by nearly 20 points just two years ago. It happened again in the Rio Grande Valley. Monica de la Cruz, a Republican representative, lost to Democrat Bobby Pulido by a margin of 25 points. Trump had won that same spot by 18 points in 2024.
It wasn’t just one place. In North Carolina, Richard Ojeda won a district Trump had taken by 16 points. In a district Tim Moore, a GOP Rep., had drawn specifically for himself, LaKesha Womack defeated him. Rep. Scott DesJarlais suffered a loss to Victoria Broderick even within Tennessee’s 4th District. Trump had won that district by well over 30 points. Five to seven seats flipped to Democrats in states where Republicans previously secured double-digit victories, per the New York Post.
The Math That Breaks the Left
Here is where the plan falls apart. Daily Signal reports that the Democratic Socialists of America emerged much stronger following the 2026 midterms. They thought they could hold the party hostage. Ahead of the vote, DSA-backed candidates Darializa Avila Chevalier and Melat Kiros discussed using their leverage to influence the House speaker selection. Support for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was explicitly withheld by them.
But the numbers changed everything. Decision Desk indicates that Democrats are expected to secure 249 seats, with more still to be counted. That is a huge margin. A speaker could still be elected with 218 votes, meaning Democrats could lose up to 31 votes. The DSA bloc is now far less powerful. They can no longer block the leader they hate. The party has so many new members that they do not need the radicals to win.
A Shift in Power
Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Senate race, adding to the wave. Exit polls cited by the New York Post show the electorate leaned three points more Democratic than Republican. This was a total flip from 2024, when the electorate was about four points more Republican. The Post suggests that dissatisfaction with the Trump administration likely caused many Republican voters to abstain.
But the real story is what happens next. In 2028, Melat Kiros discussed “laying the groundwork” regarding a Democrat trifecta, meaning control of the White House along with both the Senate and the House. She said in that future, “we can actually start delivering massive transformational changes.” That dream is now in the hands of the mainstream. The radicals wanted to run the show. Now they are just one small part of a much bigger team.
