FBI Arrests Man For Stalking Stephen Miller And His Family

The Arrest and the Charges

The FBI arrested a Massachusetts man on Thursday for stalking former Trump adviser Katie Miller. John Anthony Proia III, 41, faces federal charges for a campaign of harassment targeting Miller and her family. He allegedly made more than 40 contacts over two months using different phone numbers. The Justice Department confirmed the victim is Miller, who hosts a popular conservative podcast. The White House deputy chief of staff for policy is Stephen Miller, her spouse. Per NBC News, the Justice Department did not name her in the initial filing, but an official confirmed her identity. A federal grand jury in Boston indicted Proia on a single count of cyberstalking.

Prosecutors say Proia used an ever-changing series of unfamiliar phone numbers to reach the family. Allegedly, a male caller used a menacing tone and frequent expletives to send the messages. He called Miller’s husband evil and a Jewish Nazi/white supremacist in texts to her parents. The Washington Examiner reported that Proia called the victim filth and used other derogatory terms in messages to her parents.

Official Responses and Internal Fallout

Leah Foley, the US Attorney, said the defendant relentlessly and repeatedly targeted the victim with deeply disturbing communications. On social media, Attorney General Todd Blanche noted this conduct is criminal and warrants prosecution. He also praised the Boston office, saying, “Great work by our USAO in Boston.” Miller posted on X to thank the team, writing, “Thank you Todd Blanche, Leah Foley, and the Washington Field Office.”

The investigation became public after two counterterrorism officials at the FBI’s Washington Field Office were demoted. The New York Post reported these officials were reassigned to lesser positions in the agency’s Washington headquarters. The demotions occurred over issues related to the inquiry into the stalking case. This shows the agency is holding its own leadership accountable for how it handles such threats. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts characterized the messages sent to the victim and her family as disturbing.

What Happens Next

Proia appeared in federal court at 5 p.m. Thursday after his arrest earlier that afternoon. He faced charges for cyberstalking a prominent Republican Party figure and former political advisor. The office described the defendant as a 41-year-old resident of Waltham. Federal prosecutors secured the indictment before his court appearance. The case moves forward as the court schedules further proceedings. Per the Washington Examiner, the suspect was arrested by the FBI earlier in the afternoon.

This case highlights the real danger of anonymous online harassment against public figures and their families. Technology allows bad actors to hide, but federal agents are tracking them down. The law must protect families from this kind of relentless fear and intimidation. We will see if the court holds Proia accountable for the significant emotional distress he caused. The government has made it clear that attempts to anonymize criminal conduct will not shield anyone from prosecution.
