Flávio Bolsonaro Stuns Brazil With Massive Runoff Victory

The Sunday Count

Brazilians went to the polls on Sunday. The results are mostly in. The sitting president faces a runoff because Flávio Bolsonaro compelled it.

Nearly 100 percent of the votes are recorded. RedState reported the count stands at 99.8 percent. The country’s electoral court in Brasilia made the call. Neither candidate got the majority needed. The 80-year-old incumbent and the 45-year-old son of a former president will face off again.

The runoff election happens on October 25. The winner takes charge of Latin America’s biggest economy. It is a population of 214 million people. The next term starts on January 5. This is a huge stakes game.

How the Votes Fell

Flávio Bolsonaro is in the lead. He has 47.12 percent of the support. That is nearly 56 million votes. Breitbart noted the numbers clearly. President Lula obtained 45.05 percent. He has about 53.5 million votes. The gap is tight.

The third-place candidate got far less. Self-help author Augusto Cury took 2.89 percent. That is about 3.4 million votes. He is out of the race. The other 11 candidates did not matter. It was a two-man show.

Brazilians voted for more than just the president. They chose local state leaders too. They picked seats in the Brazilian Congress. The whole government is up for grabs. Per Breitbart, the general elections covered all these spots.

Where the Support Lies

The map shows a clear split. Lula’s socialist Workers’ Party won most northern states. They took every one except Roraima. Bolsonaro and his Liberal Party won the south. They also took Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. These are the big economic hubs.

Flávio Bolsonaro looked like he might win early. He appeared over the 50 percent mark. His lead over Lula grew at first. Then the votes from the northeast rolled in. Those are leftist strongholds. His lead dwindled as those numbers came. Breitbart described this shift in the vote count.

The rules are strict in Brazil. A candidate must get over 50 percent to win in round one. No one hit that mark this time. The winner of the runoff just needs the highest number. It does not matter how many votes they get. RedState confirmed this simple rule.
