GOP Chair Condemns KKK Sign Targeting Black Speaker In Minnesota

A Black woman leader faced a symbol of racial terror at a dinner named for the man who ended slavery. That is the plain truth of what happened in Eagan last Friday night. Radical protesters stormed the stage to display a KKK sign while House Speaker Lisa Demuth spoke. This was not a misunderstanding. It was a calculated act of intimidation.
The Minnesota Republican Party Chair, Alex Plechash, did not mince words about the event. He stated in a post to X that “Last night, radical protesters stormed the stage at our Lincoln Reagan Dinner and held up a KKK symbol while Speaker Lisa Demuth spoke,” per Fox News. The group behind the disruption, Sunrise Movement Twin Cities, claimed they acted to protest policies they believe hurt immigrants. According to reports, they acknowledged disrupting the fundraiser since they “refuse to give a moment’s peace to the people bankrolling racial violence.”
The Facts of the Disruption
Security footage shows the scene clearly. Signs in hand, demonstrators advanced toward the front of the room. One sign had the letters “KKK” highlighted in red, per Fox News. A protester shouted, “You love Trump and you will not stand up for Minnesotans,” as Demuth stood on stage. Plechash noted that the group gained access by buying tickets and passing through security checkpoints. Roughly three or four protesters pushed forward during the remarks. The entire disruption lasted about 30 seconds.
A Dangerous Precedent
Why target a Black woman at a Lincoln Reagan dinner? The group did not hide their intent. Plechash made the point clear: “Let’s be clear about what happened.” He continued, noting that left leaning protesters directed a symbol of racial terror at a Black woman leader during a dinner named for the president who ended slavery. The irony is thick enough to choke on. They used the most hated symbol in American history to silence a Black Republican woman.
The group claimed it was not affiliated with the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Yet, the tactics feel familiar to anyone watching the news. They call their actions a protest against fraud and violence. But holding a KKK sign is not a policy debate. It is an act of fear. As Plechash told the outlet, Eagan police issued trespass orders and potential charges remain under investigation.
What Voters Must Watch
This event happens while Michele Tafoya runs for Senate against Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan. Tafoya’s campaign says her message on holding “fraudsters accountable” is resonating with Minnesotans. They argue that billions of tax dollars were stolen during Flanagan’s eight years. RealClearPolling rated the race a “Toss Up” in September. The Cook Political Report calls it “likely Democrat.” But the climate in Minnesota is shifting fast.
Violence and protests have already broken out over ICE raids in the state. Tensions escalated when two protesters were killed by immigration agents. Now, we see political violence at a dinner for a GOP candidate.
