Richard Stern of the Plymouth Institute criticized this idea as a mistake. “His proposal sounds great, right?” Stern asked. In many cases, the reality is actually a $9,000 divorce bonus.

Confusion in the Senate

Things got messy when Senator Mitch McConnell returned to work. He had been away for more than 90 days due to a fall and pneumonia. The New York Post reported that a fellow Republican tried to tell him how to vote. Senator John Hoeven leaned over and told the 84-year-old leader to vote no on the farm bill.

McConnell voted aye anyway, though the clerk did not hear him at first. Hoeven tried again, but McConnell voted aye a second time with more volume. A staffer for Senator John Boozman later explained that Hoeven thought the vote was different. The farm bill passed the committee in a 12-11 party-line vote.

McConnell posted on social media after the vote to praise the effort. He said he was proud to support the hardworking farm families in Kentucky. His staff has been moving him around the Capitol in a wheelchair since he returned. The report notes that aides shared very few photos of him during his long absence.

The new affordability plan focuses heavily on fixing housing rules. It claims that government rules add 26.4% to the cost of a new home. Stern believes that changing land use laws will help the most.
