Ilhan Omar Hires Biden’s Lawyer And Trump’s Impeachment Counsel

You expect a lawyer who knows immigration law to fight deportation. That is the promise. But Rep. Ilhan Omar has hired two attorneys who specialize in political battles, not border rules. One helped President Biden with his autopen. The other led the legal charge against President Trump. This mismatch raises a big question about what the Minnesota Democrat fears most.
A Team of Political Warriors
According to the New York Post, Omar’s defense duo includes Amy Jeffress. She became President Biden’s personal attorney in 2025. Before that, she represented him when he faced probes over signing documents with an autopen. Her partner is Joshua Matz. He also works at the firm Hecker Fink. He represented House Democrats during both of President Trump’s impeachments. He also served on the House Jan. 6 committee legal team.
Neither of these lawyers specializes in immigration law. This fact stands out. The probe into Omar’s history is being led by the US Attorney in DC. The search of her home happened recently. Timothy “Tim” Mynett, her husband, walked their dog two days after the raid. The New York Post notes the raid was under a court order from the DOJ.
The Name Game and the Money
Why hire political fighters for a legal status fight? The answer might lie in other troubles. A filing from the US Attorney’s Office refers to her as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.” This name appears in a document signed by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro. The filing mentions a search warrant for her residence. The document identifies her as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” This reference links to long-standing rumors about her family ties.
Rep. Omar fired back at these claims on social media. She called the Republican Party the “pedophile protection” party. She claimed they were “laundering right-wing conspiracy theories through the most corrupt” Department of Justice. Posting on X, she stated, “Whenever the news turns bad, this creep reaches for one name: mine.” She added, “Maybe you should focus on what your VP’s real name is.”
Yet, financial questions remain. Omar told an MS NOW interviewer that she lives “paycheck to paycheck.” This comes despite a congressional salary of $174,000. The New York Post reports deep suspicion in Congress over her finances. Her husband is also facing scrutiny over alleged fraudulent gains.
A Costly Legal Battle
The defense is going to cost a lot of money. A video captured Omar inside a moving car. She asked supporters for cash to help her pay. “It is going to be a very expensive and challenging time and so we appreciate whether you’re able to send $5, $10, $20,” she said in the video. She remarked that federal agents prevented her from contacting her attorney for an hour following a home search.
The choice of lawyers suggests a different battle. Jeffress previously represented former FBI lawyer Lisa Page. Page wrote anti-Trump texts during the 2016 campaign.
