Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian took the podium at the United Nations on Wednesday to deliver a defiant speech. He claimed his country has “been the victim of terrorism” while blaming the United States and Israel for Middle East chaos. The atmosphere turned tense when Pezeshkian held up a photo of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. According to the New York Post, the only American representative at the gathering departed as a protest following this move. Per NBC News, this marked the first time a leader from a nation currently at war with the US has addressed the world body.

Pezeshkian did not hold back his accusations against Washington. He told world leaders, “The United States president described us as terrorists,” and added, “We have been the victims of terrorism”. He specifically pointed to a deadly school strike in Minab that killed 120 children in February. According to Breitbart, he claimed an American bomb caused the tragedy, though experts say there are reasonable grounds to believe war crimes occurred. The death toll varies, with Iranian state media reporting 168 people killed, mostly children.

Defiance and Nuclear Warnings

The Iranian leader made it clear that his nation would not surrender its demands. Citing the New York Post, he declared that heads would never bow or knees bend while delivering a severe caution to the world. Pezeshkian contended that security must be shared by all, or else insecurity will be shared by everyone together. This speech came just one day after President Donald Trump threatened to “annihilate” Iran, according to NBC News. In his reply, Pezeshkian noted that America and Israel launched attacks using the newest technology and weapons systems, yet our people remained steadfast.

He also addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza with emotional language. “In Gaza, over 80,000 innocent civilians have been murdered, brutally murdered,” he said, accusing Israel of genocide. Despite the tension, Pezeshkian stated that Iran remains open to negotiations. However, he vowed that his country would not limit its nuclear program, which he maintains is for civilian purposes only. He further stated that Iran’s defensive systems were constructed so nobody could assume bombing Iranian cities would remain without response.

He described the assassination of his Supreme Leader as happening “without any legal framework or reason”. The President insisted that while his nation faced attacks, they did not target civilians. “We responded, but we did not hit civilian populations,” he claimed during his remarks.
