He told senators, “I’m proud of the work my team did, and I appreciate the opportunity to appear here today to correct false and misleading narratives about our work,” according to RedState.

He laid out his method clearly. “Throughout my public service, my approach has always been the same: Follow the facts and the law without fear or favor,” Smith stated. He noted that “Experienced prosecutors know that specific case outcomes are beyond our control.”

Smith made it clear he did not care about politics. “I made my decisions without regard to President Trump’s political association, activities, beliefs, or candidacy in the 2024 election,” he said. He claimed the charges happened because the evidence showed Trump “willfully brok” the law.

One Honest Admission

Smith did admit to one big mistake. He told senators his only failing was that he did not talk enough. He lost public support because he let false attacks go unanswered. He said, “Our responsibility is to do the right thing, the right way, for the right reasons.” But he admitted he did not sell that message well.

The Washington Times reports Smith believes his approach was always correct. He said, “We observed legal requirements and took actions based on the facts and the law.” He also noted, “During my tenure as special counsel, we followed Justice Department policies.”

The Unresolved Tension

Smith stands firm on his actions. He insists he did the job right. But he knows the public did not agree with him. He says he would do it again. Yet the people did not trust the process.
