Justice Department Charges 28 Noncitizens After Leslie Stahl Downplays Fraud

The Justice Department announced charges against 28 noncitizens on Monday. This crackdown on illegal voting happened just hours after CBS News downplayed the problem. The timing is no accident. Leslie Stahl told viewers the issue was minor. She claimed “very, very few” noncitizens vote. The feds proved her wrong the next morning.
The CBS Segment and the Response
On Monday, CBS aired a 60 Minutes segment, according to the Federalist. Leslie Stahl spoke with Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon. Stahl tried to minimize the threat of election fraud. She stated that some believe the goal is to cast doubt on the entire election system. She remarked that very few noncitizens end up voting. Very, very few. And so therefore what’s the purpose?
Dhillon pushed back immediately. She informed Stahl that the actual point contradicts your statement. It’s not to sow distrust. The distrust is there. She noted that these crimes are now being prosecuted “for the first time really in volume.” The Justice Department moved fast. They launched Operation Protect the Vote on Monday. They charged 28 people in California with felony offenses.
Most of those charged allegedly cast ballots. The DOJ press release stated that 23 noncitizens voted in U.S. elections. They lied on naturalization documents to do it. One man, Alexander Muñoz, registered illegally in 2019. He voted in four elections between 2020 and 2024. Another man, Rouzbeh Seyamaknejad, voted in the 2024 election after registering in 2018.
Decades of Illegal Ballots
This is not just a California story. A federal grand jury in North Carolina indicted 10 noncitizens for the 2024 election. Some of these people voted for decades. Robert Harold Corbett is a Canadian native. He registered to vote in 1998. He then voted in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2016, and 2024. He cast ballots for over twenty years.
U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle held a press conference in Raleigh. He made it clear that this hurts real Americans. He warned that illegal voting is not a victimless crime. Boyle issued a direct threat to those who might try it again. Regarding our 2026 election, these indictments warn anyone considering illegal voting: we monitor, we will locate you, and we will prosecute. The DOJ has now charged 113 noncitizens in 20 states in less than two months.
The Bottom Line
The administration is taking action. The Trump administration ordered California to review voter rolls. The state failed to meet a 48-hour deadline. Now, the feds are stepping in. They are arresting people who lied about their citizenship. Denis Joseph Bouchard was convicted earlier this year. He lived in the U.S. since the 1960s but never became a citizen. He voted in nine federal elections.
Stahl asked what the purpose was. The Justice Department just gave the answer. They are protecting the vote for every legal citizen. The numbers show a massive effort is underway. The message to illegal voters is clear. We are watching.
