Three female jurors spoke out about the Lindsay Clancy murder trial after an 11-1 deadlock led to a mistrial. The New York Post reported that panel nurses utilized their personal medical expertise to clarify evidence, a point these women acknowledged. The jurors claimed they tried to help a lone male holdout understand the toxicology report presented in court. One juror told NBC10 Boston that the holdout “completely disregarded” the information the nurses provided to him.

The group included a retired special needs teacher, a chef, and a former government contractor. They said the male juror rarely approached the cart holding trial exhibits. “He would not interact with us and try to understand,” one of the women stated. The eleven jurors, seeking a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict for Clancy, grew frustrated by this disengagement.

Outside Information vs Court Evidence

The situation raised questions about whether jurors followed the judge’s strict instructions. The judge told the panel on Day 22 not to use outside information or electronic devices. The jurors admitted they used their nursing backgrounds to interpret the medical reports instead of relying only on expert witnesses.

It was argued that the nurses acted as unsworn expert witnesses during their private talks. He noted that jurors are allowed to use common sense but cannot introduce new medical evidence. The judge’s instructions were clear that only evidence from the trial should inform the verdict.

The Lone Holdout and the Verdict

The deadlock occurred because one man refused to sign the insanity verdict forms. The foreperson said she was “so excited” when the holdout admitted he had reasonable doubt. She started filling out the three required forms. Jurors stated that Clancy “viciously killed her children,” a fact he could not move past.

The jurors also rejected a suggestion from the holdout to have the judge explain reasonable doubt again. The group replied, “No, we have it in front of us. We don’t need that.” The judge declared a mistrial on Friday after the panel failed to reach a unanimous decision.

In January 2023, Clancy confessed to murdering her three young children within their Massachusetts residence. Her defense argued she was legally insane due to postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors claimed she planned the killings and made up the psychotic break. The jury remained split 11 to 1 on the verdict, leaving the case without a resolution.
