NY Governor Hochul Wears Hijab Ahead of 9/11 Anniversary

New York Governor Kathy Hochul wore a black hijab last Friday while addressing a crowd at an Islamic center in New York. Just days prior to the nation commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, this occurred. Video showed her speaking to Muslim religious and community leaders. The event drew sharp criticism from across the political spectrum.

Rep. Brandon Gill, a Republican from Texas, posted a photo of the moment on social media. “Democrats: ‘Sexist Republicans are turning America into the Handmaid’s Tale,” he wrote. Also Democrats: The post highlighted the contrast between Democratic rhetoric and this specific action. Critics noted this was not the first time the governor had worn the headscarf.

A Pattern of Behavior

According to RedState, other female Democratic leaders have done the same thing. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi have both worn hijabs to appeal to Muslim voters. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan have also participated in similar gestures. The outlet noted that Democrats have long used the novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” to attack conservatives.

Rep. Yassamin Ansari, a Democrat from Arizona, made a dramatic claim. She stated, “we’re living in the Handmaid’s Tale – in the state of Arizona.” She argued that the book was no longer fiction but a reality where women are powerless. Joy Reid and Sunny Hostin have also used the “Gilead” label to describe red states and Republican women.

The Governor’s Own Words

During her visit to the Islamic Center of New York, Governor Hochul spoke directly to the audience. She thanked Ambassador Tareq Albanai and the local imam for hosting her. She expressed gratitude to the executives who are a part of the organization for allowing her to be part of the family. The center publicized the visit on Friday.

Meanwhile, the governor has also made promises to protect Jewish communities. At Shabbat services at the Central Synagogue in Manhattan, she delivered remarks pledging to increase security for synagogues and Jewish communities across the state ahead of the High Holidays. This came after reports that the imam at this same center once blamed Jews for the 9/11 attacks. Only Jews were capable of destroying the World Trade Center, he claimed.

The Political Backlash

Social media users reacted quickly to the footage of the governor. One user named Anthony Galli posted a tweet with the caption, “Best I can do is a hijab.” Another user, End Wokeness, noted that New York had forgotten its history. The image of a self-proclaimed feminist donning a symbol of Islamic humility struck many as a major contradiction. Critics argue this shows a willingness to abandon Western values to signal obedience to Islamists.
