One House Race Just Broke The $52 Million Record

You expect a midterm election to cost a lot of money. You expect millions to change hands for ads and mailers. But the actual number for one single race in North Carolina will shock you. More than $52 million has been spent on just one House seat. That is the most ever for a House general election in our entire history.
The Washington Examiner tabulated these figures using data from AdImpact. The race is in North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District. Democrat Don Davis is fighting to keep his seat. The district was redrawn in 2025 to favor Republicans. The new map moved many counties with black populations into a neighboring GOP district. It added conservative coastal counties to Davis’s seat instead.
The Cash Split in North Carolina
Democrats spent roughly $30 million in this district. Republicans spent $23 million. That is a total of over $52 million on one contest. This happened because the map changed. In 2024, President Donald Trump would have secured this district by over 11 points under the new boundaries. The money is pouring in because both sides see a real chance to flip the seat.
Florida and Michigan Follow Suit
Other races are not far behind. In Florida’s 25th Congressional District, Rep. Jared Moskowitz is also defending a redrawn seat. Democrats spent over $24 million there. Republicans spent roughly the same amount. Trump would have won that district by 9 points under the new map. In Michigan’s 7th District, Republican Tom Barrett faces climate activist Will Lawrence. Republicans spent $28 million while Democrats spent $19 million. During the 2024 election, Trump claimed that district with a margin slightly exceeding 1 point.
The Cost of a Swing Vote
New York’s 17th District has seen over $46 million spent. Rep. Former Vice President Kamala Harris previously won the seat that Mike Lawler is now defending. Republicans made up about $26 million of that total. Democrats spent a little over $20 million. These numbers show that redistricting creates expensive fights. The price tag reflects the difficulty of the political environment.
Many of the top 10 races were redrawn to help Republicans. Yet a tough political climate gives Democrats a shot at several of them. That is why the spending is so high. The Washington Examiner notes that the 2026 cycle will be the most expensive midterm ever. The money tells us which seats are truly in play. If you see a number like $52 million, you know the outcome is far from certain.
