Rep. Stevens Stuns Allies As Fiancé Walks Away Over Antisemitic Ads

Rep. Haley Stevens says she still backs her party’s Senate pick, even as cracks form in the camp. She told CNN on Wednesday that she believes Abdul El-Sayed “can” and “will” denounce dangerous ads. One of those ads blames Jews for the cost of groceries being high. Stevens insists the candidate will fix this. But her own fiancé walked away from the race on Wednesday.
The Fiancé Walks Away
Jason Turkish, who is Stevens’s fiancé, showed up at a Republican event for Mike Rogers. He attended the gathering hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition. Turkish spoke about El-Sayed’s behavior. “He got worse and worse and worse as this general election campaign has gone on,” Turkish said, according to RedState. He told The Detroit News he could not stomach the rhetoric. Turkish called the candidate’s actions reckless toward the safety of Jews. “We have never seen a candidate for U.S. Senate act so recklessly toward the safety of Jews in the community as we have seen from Abdul,” he told the outlet, according to the Daily Wire. Turkish said every time El-Sayed talks about genocide, Jews get death threats.
A Former Chair Also Leaves
It is not just Turkish leaving the fold. David Kramer, Stevens’s former campaign chair, told Jewish Insider he plans to vote for Rogers. Kramer has issues with the Republican. But he said he made peace with voting for him. Kramer believes Rogers is the safer choice given the climate. El-Sayed responded to the defections calmly. He stated that if other individuals encounter a different matter holding greater significance for them, this decision belongs to them.
Stevens remains firm on CNN. She says she wants her nominee to win. “I still very much want our Democratic nominee, his name is Abdul, to win this race,” she said. She claims voters are confused and hurt. Yet she insists El-Sayed will shut out the hate. “I know that he has it in him to denounce these two ads, to take them down,” Stevens said, according to Breitbart. She wants to encourage the campaign to call out the hate. Stevens says she believes he will do that.
